Founded in May 1954, Higher Education Press (HEP) is one of the earliest professional education publishing institutions after the founding of PRC. Under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and after 60 years’ development, HEP has become a comprehensive publishing house focusing on educational, professional and scientific publications, such as publications in higher education, vocational education, adult education and social education. In 1983, Deng Xiaoping wrote the title for HEP. In December, 2010, China Education Publishing & Media Group Ltd. was established, with HEP as a core member.

HEP maintains a leading position in publishing scale, market share, product digitalization, internationalization and overall strength in China’s press industry. It publishes books, audio and video products, electronic publications, network publications and periodicals. Its various products with 24 language versions are sold to over 60 countries and regions. Renowned for its high quality publications, HEP has published a large number of influential books, audio and video products, electronic publications and network publications over the years, of which 1,681 have won national and provincial awards. HEP has made great achievements, and been awarded with the “National Excellent Publishing House”, “National Advanced Publishing Unit”, “National Top 100 Excellent Publishing Unit”, “World Intellectual Property Organization Creativity Gold Award - Unit Award”. It is the only one to be on the list of top 50 independent publishers in global publishing industry, thus being a real backbone of Chinese education publishing circle.

With the continuing advancement of reform in culture and education system, China's cultural undertakings are now developing rapidly. In this new era, HEP has successfully completed transformation and formulated Development Plan during the 12th Five-year Period with high-quality product, digitalization and highly competent personnel as core strategies, injecting new forces for development. Under the guidance of the Development Plan, HEP will continue to uphold the concept of “taking root in education, promoting academic development, diversifying culture and serving the society”. It strives to be an advocate of advanced education, explorer of effective teaching method and disseminator of advanced teaching content, so as to promote the development of Chinese education publishing industry and socialist culture and strengthening the influence of Chinese culture in the world.
