Prof. Penghui FU

   Yunshan Senior Professor, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, retired UN-Certified Translator, Senior Reviser, former Chief of Verbatim Reporting Service and Deputy Director, Meetings and Publishing Division, United Nations.

   Graduated from the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in July 1980; graduated from the United Nations Translators Training Program (Graduate Studies), based in the Beijing Foreign Studies Institute, in May 1984, with two United Nations Certificates for Chinese Translators and Verbatim Reporters respectively; graduated from the Graduate School, City University of New York, in February 1989, with a MA degree in Political Science; Completed doctoral courses in Political Science, in the Graduate School, City University of New York, in February 1992 (discontinued thereafter).

   Long experience in the field of translation - acted as a Translator/Interpreter, for the Beijing Bureau of the Baltimore Sun, an American Newspaper, from August 1980 to August 1983, doing interview interpretation and translating articles from Chinese newspapers and magazines; was employed by the United Nations from September 1984 up until retirement in February 2017, having served in various capacities – translator, Reviser, Senior Reviser/Chief of Chinese Verbatim Reporting Section, Chief of Verbatim Reporting Service, and Deputy Director, Meetings and Publishing Division; translated, revised, or otherwise contributed to the processing of, the meeting records, or what is called verbatim records, for thousands of meetings, including those of the Security Council, General Assembly and First Committee, covering a broad range of subjects, such as political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical – with a word count of tens of millions; participated, as Deputy Director, in the work of the Department Management Group, where the Department’s important policy issues and work programs were discussed and adopted; was actively involved in conducting the United Nations Competitive Examinations for Chinese Translators, Editors and Verbatim Reporters, as member of the Board of Examiners in 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2010, and served as Chair of the Board of Examiners in 2013 for the Examinations for Arabic, Russian and Spanish Verbatim Reporters respectively, in 2015 for the Examination for Chinese Verbatim Reporters, and in 2016 for the Examination for Russian Verbatim Reporters; As one of the coordinators of the UN Outreach Program with the universities, with which the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Training of Language Professionals, gave several lectures since 2010 in the Shanghai International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and China Translation Corporation respectively. Was employed by the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies as a Yunshan Senior Professor for the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies in August 2017.
